A North Carolina Central University student was involved in a fatal car accident on Tuesday evening, according to a statement from the university.

Durham Police say the accident occurred at 6:39 Tuesday evening on Highway 55 near Crete Street.

22-year-old Chekeria Renae Reid was killed in the crash. The NCCU Senior from Greensboro was a recreation administration major with a concentration in sports management and a minor in business. She also served as a team manager with the football and women’s basketball teams.

Reid was a passenger in a 2000 Honda Accord driven by 19-year-old Tariq Jamal Jacobs – a sophomore at NCCU and member of the football team. The Accord crossed the center line and collided with a 2008 Chevy Cobalt.

As of last report, Jacobs and the driver of the Cobalt, 27-year-old Joshua Clark, were being treated for what appeared to be non life-threatening injuries.

Investigators say speed appears to be a factor in the accident.

No charges have been filed at this time, but the accident is still under investigation.

The university is making counselors available to grieving students.

A memorial service will be held on the football field Wednesday afternoon at four o’clock.
