A public meeting will be held Tuesday May 3, to discuss a commemorative marker at the Old Chapel Hill Cemetery.

A similar marker was installed on February 4th honoring the 361 slaves and free people of color that are known to be buried in the Old Chapel Hill Cemetery. The marker was quickly removed however, after town residents and UNC students criticized it’s wording, which read “Here Rest in Honored Glory 361 American Persons of Color Known But to God.”

In addition to the language, residents were upset that the marker was installed without a ceremony or public recognition.

At the time, Mayor Pam Hemminger said there needed to have been a public input process before the original cemetery marker was installed.

Minister Robert Campbell, a community activist, will speak Tuesday about meetings he has held recently with community members regarding the marker.

The meeting will be held at the Hargraves Community Center at 216 North Roberson Street at 7 pm.
