I’ll be posting my regular weekly column Sunday evening as usual, but something caught my eye earlier today. Hence this mid-week “flash post”. My column on October 7, “Why This is an Important Year to Get your Flu Shot”, laid out the arguments that suggest that the flu season of 2012-2013 would be worse than the previous two. The red line in the graph at the top of page, from the North Carolina Department of Health, shows the percentage of outpatient visits which are related to flu-like disease.
As you can see from the graph, my prediction was correct and the number of flu cases are nearly triple what we have experienced during the previous two winters. Please note the green line is from 2009, the year of the H1N1 pandemic. So let me deliver my second admonishment of the season. If you haven’t done so already, go get your flu shot.
