The State Fair Starts Today

Today is Thursday, October 15, 2015.  The North Carolina State Fair kicks off today.  We also learn that you do not have to be in a car to get a DUI.

 

State Fair

The North Carolina State Fair starts today at 3 PM.

The mascot for the State Fair is Casey Cardinal.  Casey is actually a new take on an old mascot.  Back in 1968, a contest was held to determine the State Fair mascot and Casey Cardinal was the winner.  The North Carolina State Bird is the cardinal.

There is a new pavilion at the state fair.  The The Tobacco Pavilion is being used for the opening ceremony, as well as the tobacco tying contest Friday and a mock tobacco auction on October 24.  There is also a huge, stone fireplace.

There will be no live chickens, ducks, geese or baby chicks this year as state officials hope to prevent the spread of avian flu.  Just that cardinal.

There will be a dozen new rides among the 95 on the midway of the state fair.

The state fair means that there will be food that you probably cannot get anywhere else.  See the new state fair foods below.

DUI on a Motorized Wheel Chair

You don’t have to be driving a car to get a DUI….In his arrest report, police say a Florida man appeared highly intoxicated, because his speech was slurred and he was acting confused.

Since he was also operating a motorized wheelchair, the 54-year-old man was arrested for driving under the influence.  He was allegedly blocking the path on a pedestrian bridge inside a park near Margaret and Helen streets in Palm Bay. Police were called because of complaints.

A sixth person was injured at the North Carolina State Fair as a 35-year-old worker was hurt while disassembling a ride.
