Exploring Your Creative Genius: Episode 37
This week’s episode of “Exploring Your Creative Genius” features Charles Robinson — entrepreneur, real estate developer, investor, and founder of 1888 Ventures and Robinson Capital Group.
As Charles told us his stories, he raised important topics for our creative and entrepreneurial life.
Time and again, he talked about “finding friends fast” and the concept of building your social capital, your network of friends and associates. As he put it, he wants to spend time around creative minds so that he can benefit from their ideas. He stressed the importance of being kind, of showing generosity to others; then they invite you to be part of their creative world.
It came up in this conversation that while it is true that creative ideas are generated by someone’s imagination recent research shows that in many instances the person who comes up with the best idea—both unique and practical — is the individual who has the most robust and especially diverse social capital network.
A topic I am keen to promote to folks these days is Common Wealth, that idea that each of us and all of us benefit from it’s creation with my go to example being the Common Wealth found in a new venture incubator. When founders join they are agreeing to bring their contacts and knowledge and experiences to share with the other founders and all benefit as each benefits.
Charles talked about working with Chris Gergen as they spread Forward Cities programs across the nation, helping communities and regions grow and sustain more equitable environmental ecosystems. As one of the first tech pioneers Mitch Kapor stated “Talent is equally distributed across all zip codes but opportunity is not.” What great work to provide that opportunity! Listen to the above for the full conversation, and for more about how Forward Cities is a national nonprofit equipping communities and regions to grow and sustain more equitable entrepreneurial ecosystems.
“Exploring Your Creative Genius” takes an expansive view on what it means to be creative and entrepreneurial in an ongoing conversation led by Carl Nordgren — entrepreneur, novelist, and lifelong student with decades of experience growing his own creative capacity and assisting others to do the same in exciting new ways!
