OWASA and Forever Chemicals

A perspective from Burwell Ware

According to the OWASA Web site, “We are working towards pilot testing and designing a combination of treatment technologies for addition at our Jones Ferry Road WTP” (Water Treatment Plant).

“We expect to find a technology or combination of technologies that will reduce PFAS levels to meet our goals. After pilot testing and design work, we will begin construction, which is expected to be complete in three to five years.”

I realize that this is mandated by the EPA, but three to five years is a lot of time to wait for safe water, and Consumer Reports finds that there are point-of-use water filters that can reduce PFAS contamination right now. It would be wise for the EPA to encourage OWASA to buy approved water filters in bulk and sell them at cost or (by including in the price) subsidize customers who receive government assistance.

There are practical considerations for point-of-use water filters, such as regular maintenance of them, attention by renters and low-income people about the scope of the problem, etc., but I think we have to do something now instead of waiting until 2029.

If OWASA’s plan is implemented, expect water rates to go up  dramatically.
