On UNC Football

A perspective from Owen Maddux

I read with interest Art Chansky’s opinion piece titled “Parting Ways.”

In my opinion, Art misses the mark. Mack Brown is the coach who needs to retire and perhaps be a fundraiser for UNC. I see a similar situation to the Philip Fulmer situation that came to exist at the University of Tennessee.

I have two degrees from UTK and lived in the Chattanooga, TN area for sixty plus years. I have now lived in Hillsborough for 2 3/4 years due to children and grandchildren living in North Carolina.

I have a son, two daughters in law and a son in law that have UNC degrees and who support UNC. Thus I would like to see UNC football do a lot better. The problem with Mack Brown is the same problem Phil Fulmer had at UTK. They have both become too old when compared to most head coaches and too set in old ways that do not get the job done in the current era. The transfer portal is there now, I admit, but what 18-year-old wants to sign on with a coach who may retire next year or have a health problem and be unable to coach?

I admit that there are old coaches still coaching like at Alabama, but UNC is nowhere near any of the top nine teams in the SEC (counting Texas and Oklahoma). UNC is similar to Arkansas and South Carolina. To be competitive UNC needs a much younger head coach who will bring in young assistant coaches who can get the job done in this modern environment.

I hope to see a new head coach at UNC soon.
