Celebrating Those Who Make Our Community Special

A perspective from Richard Ellington

The late Charles Kuralt famously asked in his 1993 UNC bicentennial speech, “What is it that binds us to this place as to no other?” Ask the same question about our community and I suspect you’d get a variety of answers – our neighborhoods; the natural beauty of the area; the wonderful array of small businesses and restaurants; and the cultural, educational, athletic opportunities and excellent medical facilities offered by UNC. I’d agree with all of these but add one more – individuals who through their lifetime of actions, service and deeds have made our community a more inclusive and welcoming place for all.

The Chapel Hill Historical Society’s Community Treasures awards honor and recognize such individuals. Some of those that we honor have been at the forefront of promoting civil rights and equal opportunity; other have helped forge partnerships to provide a more vibrant place to work and play; and others have simply worked behind the scenes to care for neighbors and our community. On October 28th, we will celebrate six individuals who made our community a better place to live: Paul and Belinda Caldwell, Louise Felix, Robert Humphreys, Margorie Land, and Albert Williams. If you don’t know these individuals, you should. You can read about them and their contributions at the Historical Society’s website. Our October 28th awards ceremony, with proclamations from the Town of Chapel Hill designating these individuals as Community Treasures, will be at 3:30pm at the Seymour Center. I hope you will join us to honor these individuals.
