Bill B’s First Game Goes Splat

A perspective from Rebecca Rogers

Bill B’s First Game Goes Splat

(With gratitude and apologies to Ernest Lawrence Thayer, author of “Casey at the Bat” 1888)

The mood was optimistic at the stadium that day,

The Tar Heels under Belichick, their first game there to play.

The sold-out crowd began to swell, the media in swarms,

Could NFL now cast its spell on guys who live in dorms?

The  coin was tossed, the Tar Heels lost, but TCU deferred,

The Heels received—scored right away! Seemed Bill had kept his word.

But yet, ere long, the Hornéd Frogs, through tackles, blocks, and passes,

Scored forty-one unanswered points and handed Heels their asses.

At forty-eight to fourteen, the stadium vacated,

But TCU, victorious, was certainly elated.

Oh,  somewhere in this football land the moon is shining bright,

The pep band’s playing fight songs, the alumni’s hearts are light.

And somewhere fans are laughing, and somewhere students shout,

But there is no joy in Heelville — Mighty Bill, he’s had a rout!
