This week we celebrate Presidents’ Day. Initially known as George Washington’s Birthday, this day originated as an opportunity to celebrate the birth of the first leader of the United States. It became Presidents’ Day in 1971 when those who governed were trying to give the nation’s workers a three day weekend.

One of my favorite quotes comes from Washington:
“It is better to offer no excuse than a bad one.”

Success in any endeavor requires we preside over our time, emotions, actions, and relationships honestly. To preside over something means to take the reigns, seize the power, and focus that power on a specific outcome. Washington focused his power on winning independencefrom the British and founding the United States. Like him, we are all called to preside over our own obstacles and manifest our personal calling.
Let’s consider our obstacles:
What are you needing independence from? Do you have any addictions like wine, sugar, gambling, Facebook, unhealthy relationships, reliving bad decisions, or buying things you can’t afford?
Who or what is holding you back from manifesting your calling? What help do you need to get past it? What excuses might you be using to stay where you are?
Within you is the power to move nations. First, however, it is helpful to get practice by moving yourself.
What in your world needs to be focused? time? resources? actions? attitudes?
Where are you headed?
Don’t just read over these questions, answer them!

Here is some help for him with thoughts from a column I wrote earlier. When I was growing up, February 22, Washington’s Birthday, was a major holiday. Its replacement, Presidents’ Day, just does not have the same personal connection. There are […]
