Erin Matson is a Tar Heel, world-class athlete, team player and champion. Here, in “Notes From the Field,” she’ll be sharing some of her thoughts in an ongoing series set to cover anything and everything on her mind. You can find the full series so far here, on Chapelboro.
I’m officially a Colleen Hoover fangirl. I’m not a reader at heart, but I’ve finished two books in 4 days, and there is no end in sight!
She is a magician. But in the middle of her brilliant masterpiece, one random, mundane line served as inspiration for this week’s column: “You can learn a lot about someone in 10 minutes.”
Out of all of her intense and well-crafted sentences, that’s the one that made me go “liiiiightbulb.” (Any Despicable Me fans here? Or am I the only one that hears Gru’s voice saying that?)
So, buckle up. It’s time for rapid questions. Let’s go.
- Pineapple on pizza? All day, errday.
- Peanut butter in the fridge or in the pantry? Fridge 100%!
- Random tidbit? I weirdly love emailing. I feel like people my age or younger prefer to never use or check it. But Gmail, I don’t know where I’d be without you.
- Favorite ‘genres’ of food? Mexican, Italian, and Asian in no particular order.
- Weirdest food I’ve eaten? Duck tongue. Don’t ask.
- Night owl or early bird? Oof. Currently, night owl, but I ebb and flow with that one. Nothing like getting up and being productive, but setting my alarm for anything earlier than 8am gives me the heebies.
- Crazy thing I’ve done? I zip-lined over a pit of alligators in South Africa a few years ago. It was sick.
- Pet peeves that I’ve wasted too much time thinking about? Why do they make necklace clasps SO tiny? There’s no way putting one on is enjoyable for anybody. Also, has anyone figured out a good system for keeping and organizing the extra buttons that come with certain shirts? Help a sister out. Okay, one more; two words. Slow. Drivers.
- Favorite social media app? To use: Instagram. To lose track of time on: TikTok.
- If I could play any other sport? I think I would’ve loved volleyball! Or tennis. Being a gymnast would also be cool but there is NO WAY I could put my body through that. Props to you, girls.
- Favorite place I’ve traveled? New Zealand. Gets better each time.
- Place/city I really want to visit? Greece, Italy, Dubai, Bali, Iceland … there’s never just one.
- Breakfast, lunch, or dinner? Brunch. All day every day.
- Another random tidbit? I hate the ocean. It scares me. But I can go on boats if they’re big enough and if I’m with the right people. I’ve also been jetskiing. And, likeee, I will swim. But I just prefer to appreciate the view from the shore. We have a complicated relationship.
- Ability to fly, teleport, or be invisible? Teleport. Long-distance sucks.
- Spend money on items or experiences? What kind of question is that! Dinners, trips, games, concerts, etc. all = memories. And memories are priceless. But I’d be lying if I didn’t have a shopping problem. Who doesn’t these days??
- Starbucks or Dunkin? I’ve earned way too many stars at Starbucks, and I am not ashamed!
- Current coffee order? It’s almost Fall. If you think I’m ordering anything non-pumpkiny for the foreseeable future, you’ve got it all wrong. Grande Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew with almond milk, no vanilla syrup, and one Stevia packet coming right up. Basic and proud.
- Do the dishes or take out the trash? Anything but the dishes. An.y.thing.
- New-found love? My skincare products/routine – especially sunscreen. My boyfriend said my skin was glowing today … I just had to tell someone. If you’re a younger girl reading this, trust me, it gets better and can actually be fun!
- Random tidbit part 3? I’ve been a pescatarian since the ACC tournament in 2018. Yup, you read that right. Except a hot dog at the ballpark is in the fine print.
- Text or call? Call. Those red notification dots haunt me in my nightmares.
- Savory or sweet? Savory, then sweet, then savory. Who else can’t eat a bag of popcorn without immediately craving ice cream??
- Gold jewelry or silver? Gold FTW! Because who likes second place? Kidding. Kind of.
Alright, that’s all for now! Hopefully, you feel like the stranger’s columns you’re reading weekly are from a little-less-of-a-stranger.
And that wasn’t even 10 minutes! Colleen, keep it up, girlfriend.
