Friday, October 19, the Occonnechee Golf Course in Hillsborough will play host to the inaugural Veterans Memorial Golf Tournament, to raise funds for the Orange County Veterans Memorial project. Sunday, October 7, head to Kenan Stadium’s Blue Zone from 6-8 pm for A Tasteful Affair! Sample great food from dozens of area restaurants, enjoy music and take part in a silent auction, all to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill. Tickets and more info online at RMHCH.org.


Are you a Chapel Hill resident who was born in another country? The Chapel Hill Building Integrated Communities project wants to hear from you! They’re holding a pair of public meetings to get your feedback on public transit, housing, law enforcement and more. Come to St. Thomas More Catholic Church off Fordham Boulevard Thursday, September 27, from 7:00-8:30 pm. Community conversations in four languages: English, Burmese, Karen and Spanish.


Durham residents: the League of Women Voters is holding a Durham County candidates’ forum Sunday, October 7, from 4-6 pm at the Durham Public Schools Staff Development Center at 2107 Hillandale Road, featuring candidates for the General Assembly.


Orange County Animal Services is holding a low-cost rabies vaccination clinic Thursday, September 27, from 5-7 pm at the Farmer’s Market pavilion on Margaret Lane in Hillsborough. Bring dogs on a leash and cats in a carrier, and their previous rabies certificate, and get their 1- and 3-year vaccinations for 10 dollars. Contact animal services for more info.


“Banned Books Week” is coming to the Chapel Hill Public Library, celebrating books that have been targeted for censorship. Friday, September 21, head to the library at 7 pm for an opening reception to begin the week. Enjoy refreshments and meet the artists who designed this year’s winning “banned books trading cards”!

  • Thursday, September 27 – head to the library at 6 pm for a public conversation about censorship and the importance of intellectual freedom, with author Zelda Lockhart and multimedia artist Keith Knight.

Project Connect returns to the Hargraves Center Wednesday, October 10! It’s an annual event to connect at-risk residents with service providers, organized by Orange County’s Partnership to End Homelessness. OCPEHNC.com for more info, and go there if you want to get involved or volunteer.


The Friends of the Downtown are holding their monthly meeting Thursday, September 27, at 10 am at the Franklin Hotel. Everyone’s invited, program starts right at 10, but come for coffee at 9:30. This month’s guest speakers are Chapel Hill mayor Pam Hemminger and new town manager Maurice Jones.

Monday, October 1, Orange County’s Human Relations Commission is hosting a community conversation about Silent Sam. It’s called “Hate, Heritage and Hope” – everyone’s invited to take part, from 6-8 pm at the Southern Human Services Center on Homestead Road. Organizers are hoping to come out of the event with recommendations for county commissioners.
