Thursday, November 1, Carrboro’s community radio station WCOM is holding its annual birthday celebration at Hickory Tavern from 5-9 pm. Everyone’s invited – and 10 percent of food sales will be donated to the station.


Are you a political junkie? Saturday, December 1, head to Greenbridge on Rosemary Street from 2-4 pm for a conversation with State Representative Graig Meyer about what we learned from the midterm election – and what’s next for 2019. It’s hosted by NEXT Chapel Hill-Carrboro and everyone’s invited!


Thursday, October 25, head to the Franklin Hotel downtown for this month’s Friends of the Downtown meeting, featuring Alisa Rogers, who’s managing Chapel Hill’s “Charting Our Future” land use initiative. Come for coffee beginning at 9:30 am; the program starts at 10.


Don’t forget Franklin Street will be closed downtown for Halloween, Wednesday the 31st beginning around 8 pm. Police say they’ll try to reopen the street around 10:30 or so. More info on Halloween at the town’s website, TownOfChapelHill.org.


Saturday, November 3, Abundance NC is holding an event called the “Death Faire” in Pittsboro. It’s a celebration of life, though, and everyone’s invited… noon to 8 pm at The Plant on Lorax Lane, with live music, food, family activities and more! Get tickets and more info at AbundanceNC.org.


Art lovers: Thursday, November 1, head to the Hanes Art Center on campus for the Hanes Visiting Artist Lecture with artist-photographer Joel Sternfeld, beginning at 5:30 pm. It’s free and open to all.


Thursday, November 1, head to Smith Middle School for a performance of “The Talk,” Sonny Kelly’s one-man show about the talk African-American parents have with their kids about how to survive in America. The show begins at 7 pm, with a Q-and-A to follow…it’s a fundraiser event for Boomerang Youth, which offers alternatives to suspension for kids in Chapel Hill-Carrboro schools. Friday, October 26, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP is holding a public event on “Frederick Douglass, the 14th Amendment, and Their Relevance Today.” Everyone’s invited – it’ll be from 4:00-6:30 pm at the Southern Human Services Center on Homestead Road.


Friday, November 16, folk music legend Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary will be playing at the Arts Center in Carrboro. Get tickets and more info online at ArtsCenterLive.org.

The Hillsborough PD is hosting “Trunk-or-Treat” on Saturday, October 27, from 5-7 pm at Fairview Park. Bring the kids and enjoy a safe alternative to trick-or-treating!


The Durham-Orange metropolitan planning organization is holding a public open house for their ongoing study on the future of 15/501 – Monday, October 22, from 6-8 pm at the Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Hall on Garrett Road in Durham.


Do you have old prescriptions you need to get rid of? Saturday, October 27, head to the Orange Chatham Association of Realtors office at Chatham Downs from 10 am to 2 pm; they’re hosting a prescription drug “take back” event in conjunction with the Chatham County Sheriff’s office; bring your old prescriptions and they’ll dispose of them safely.
