Halloween is right around the corner and if your 2021 is flying by the way mine is, it means the end of another month has totally snuck up on you.

I have been asking my son Miles since September what he wanted to be for Halloween, and each time I ask him he says something different. In need of some direction, I looked to the rest of our family for ideas – including our new rescue, Oakley! Because we have Oakley now, I’ve tried to find matching costumes for him and Miles, and let’s just say – it’s been interesting.

My husband Terrance grew up in a family that doesn’t really celebrate Halloween, but when Miles came along, it brought him so much joy to see our son frolicking through the neighborhoods and running up to festively decorated homes saying, “Trick or Treat!” I’ve also noticed my husband likes the sweeter side of Halloween – nothing can stop Terrance from going through Miles’ stash and picking out his favorite candy.

As a child, I didn’t trick or treat at all because I felt like you needed a costume to do that, and I never had one. Now that I’m a parent and have the opportunity to dress Miles up for Halloween and see the fun through his eyes – I go all in.

With all that said, our family is always open to creating new traditions of our own for Halloween. This year, we’re using the opportunity to connect with new friends who just moved into the neighborhood from California. They have a small child that is one year old, and this will be his first time trick-or-treating. Halloween isn’t just for kids, so we plan on meeting at a local brewery first and then trick-or-treating in a nearby neighborhood. We have gone trick-or-treating with friends for the past six years, and it has been such a great time to enjoy our time together and build relationships.

What are your Halloween traditions? Do you trick-or-treat with friends, go out solo, or do you stay home? I’d imagine once Miles gets to the age of not wanting Terrance and I going with him, we will enjoy the holiday by staying home and greet all the children that ring our doorbell. No matter how you are spending Halloween or whether you celebrate, I want to wish you an amazing weekend and remind you to enjoy safely!
