Welcome to “Making a Splash” with Goldfish Swim School of Chapel Hill!

Every month on 97.9 The Hill, Brighton McConnell is joined by a member of the Goldfish team for a conversation about building confidence in kids, in and out of the pool. You can listen to the full segment below, as this month, Brighton has a conversation with the owner of Goldfish Swim School in Chapel Hill, Danelle Alex. This time around, the topic on “Making a Splash” is all about safety — especially since January is Bath Safety Month! Of course, being safe in the water goes well beyond the bath, and even the pool!

“Slippery surfaces make bathrooms in one of the most dangerous rooms in the house,” said Alex. More than 43,000 children each year receive some sort of emergency treatment for bath and shower related in injuries. Unfortunately, drownings, burns and then mostly slips trips and, and falls. More than half of all bath and child related injuries occur in children younger than five, and two-year-olds actually have the largest number of injuries”

To keep things safe and going swimmingly during bathtime, Alex recommends — first and foremost — to never leave a child alone. Simple changes like non-skid mats in the bathroom can also make a difference, as can some small adjustments to how bathtime is treated.

Time spent in the bath can also help prepare kids for more contact with water, according to Alex. Bathtime is a great time to practice blowing bubbles, develop basic breath control, and even get used to wearing goggles!
