Caroline Felman is a rising senior at UNC who found a love for art nearly two and a half decades ago. Whether it’s creating a memento from a special moment or trip, or just doodling in class, Caroline says that she has always loved creating.

“I started drawing probably in elementary school, and always looked forward to the hour in art class. I just grew up loving arts and crafts in general, and it’s evolved into a love for art, design, and its history.”

Years later, Caroline has traded the crayons for paintbrushes and her elementary school art class for a studio art minor here at UNC.

With the busyness of classes and life in general, Caroline says she doesn’t typically get to create pieces from start to finish as much as she would like to. However, she says that she always finds time to do something, even if it’s just a doodle on her class notes.

“My favorite thing to make is probably portraits of musicians, and my favorite medium would definitely be watercolors,” she says.

Her favorite piece that she’s ever done is a mixed-media portrait of John Lennon. Although the class doodles are tough competition, Caroline says her John Lennon piece is the only one hanging up at home.

“Everything since college has been mostly watercolors and acrylics,” she says.

To share the pieces that she has finished, Caroline opened a RedBubble shop, and she also takes commissions on her Instagram, @carolinekelly.art.  Aside from painting when she wants to capture a moment for herself, Caroline says the only other time she paints is when she is creating a gift for someone – which tends to be a painting of their pet.

“I swear I’ve probably painted more dogs than I’ve ever gotten to pet at this point, and I love that.”

While life may get crazy, and the paintings may slow down, Caroline says she has never had more of a love for the pastime. Next time you need a painting (especially if it’s of your furry friend), Caroline Kelly Art is readied with paint brushes and watercolor to create yet another masterpiece.
