This week’s Hometown Heroes, presented by Hendrick Southpoint, are Leah Nelson and Maya Powell.
Nelson and Powell are graduate students at UNC and co-chairs of UNC’s Climate Crisis Committee. They have been working to make campus more sustainable with renewable energy and ensure environmental justice. They have been working to lobby campus leaders to improve the university’s climate action plan, which includes speeding up UNC’s goal of being carbon neutral by 2040. Another project on the books for them is urging the university to shut down its coal plant and switch to alternative forms of energy.
