This week’s Hometown Hero, presented by Hendrick Southpoint, is Jim Bedford.
Bedford is a psychiatrist at UNC who specializes in IDD (patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities). When TRACK, the only program in the state to help care for children with IDD and mental illness, was discontinued and left children with IDD with no place to go to receive care, Bedford stepped in and led a successful effort to create an inpatient unit for children and adolescents with IDD at the Youth Behavioral hospital in Butner. He’s now the lead psychiatrist at that facility. But that’s just what makes Bedford a hometown hero at his job, he also dedicates his free time to volunteering with the boy scouts (now Scouting America).
