This week’s Hometown Hero, presented by Hendrick Southpoint, is Grace Beeler.
Beeler is the creator of the Appropriate Sanitation Institute. In her her studies at NC State, she found that over half the worlds population do not have adequate sanitation. She worked on a documentary centering around a sewer system used in Brazil’s biggest cities and how it works. This led her to organize Flushfest, a now annual 2-day music festival in Hillsborough to raise awareness for urban sanitation. What started as a one-time thing to raise money for a TV show based on the documentary became an annual festival to continue to bring awareness to the urban sanitation cause.
