Exploring Your Creative Genius: Episode 164

The Museum of Ojibwa Culture is located at St. Ignace in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Shirley Sorrel was the director of the Museum in 2014; she called me when she learned that ‘Anung’s Journey’ was being published. Shirley asked if I would delay the book’s publication until the end of the summer — a six week delay at that point — giving them time to arrange for me to launch the book at the Museum.

I said hell yes.

I told Shirley about my creativity work and she also arranged for me to do some creativity workshops for their school while I was there.

One of the stories in the book is the Ojibwa flood story. With the world covered in water, Sky Woman’s lament caused the massive sea turtle Mishee Mackinakong to rise to the surface and invite Sky Woman to rebuild the earth on its back.  It’s why North America is called Turtle Island in many Native American traditions.

I didn’t know until I arrived at the Museum that it is cited where this occurred — a short distance off shore in Lake Huron is Mackinac Island, the embodiment of Mishee Mackinakong.

One of the greatest successes of my writing career is that this book celebrating Ojibwa legends was born in the center of the Ojibwa universe.
