This week’s show is an exploration of the lives of handicapped people. Jennifer Chassman Browne is the guest and she talks about her new book ‘See Us, Know Us; Profiles of Disability.’
Dr. Sara Thompson, one of the folks profiled in the book, joins us as well.
As I listened to their experiences and advice I thought back to when I was a boy. In 1960 my small town in Illinois started its first Little League. On an opposing team were two brothers; the younger brother was a polio victim, his legs withered.
The brother with polio would use his two crutches to walk to the left hand hitter’s batter’s box, with his bat, and his older brother would join him, standing across home plate in the other batter’s box. The boy with polio would use his two crutches to prop himself and support his batting stance and when he indicated he was ready the pitcher would throw the ball.
I don’t think the pitcher took it easy on him, and the young fellow would most often swing and miss. But when he made contact it was powerfully struck–the side effect of his life long use of crutches was a strong upper body. And at the crack of the bat his older brother would take off for first base and if it was a clean hit he’d then run the bases consistent with game action.
I don’t know how this accomodation was reached; as I watched it occur; it felt natural, the behaviors of a community that simply knew this is how it should happen.
