Exploring Your Creative Genius: Episode 93

Our guest last Sunday was Christopher Brownell, chairperson for Mathematics and Science at Pratt Institute. Chris is particularly interested in the flow between creativity and mathematics, and you’ll hear his great stories illustrating his thoughts. If you have a family member or friend who is a math teacher, they’d enjoy hearing Chris’ thoughts.

With Sunil Singh, he co-authored ‘Math Recess: Playful Learning in an Age of Disruption.’ The book is  a collection of imaginative mathematical games and puzzles and ideas for young folk — bringing a sense of play to all learning is very effective and this book has a whole bunch of great customer reviews thanking the authors for this great resource.

One idea Chris touches on at the beginning of the show is that, while we are getting better, we need to make greater strides in integrating subject areas in schools. It is part of my advocacy as preparedness for our Unknowable Future: the ability to call on multiple perspectiveS when considering an opportunity or a problem makes it much more likely you’ll discover the best strategy for making your way.

Chris also make me think of how, during the interview process back in my venture building days, I was more interested in the questions candidates would ask about working with us than the answers given to my questions.

In mathematics the formulation of the problem is so often the key to solving it. And that means asking new questions, taking new perspectives, and that creative understanding serves us in all we do.

Or, as Einstein said, “Creativity is intelligence having fun.”

“Exploring Your Creative Genius” takes an expansive view on what it means to be creative and entrepreneurial in an ongoing conversation led by Carl Nordgren — entrepreneur, novelist, and lifelong student with decades of experience growing his own creative capacity and assisting others to do the same in exciting new ways!
