Exploring Your Creative Genius: Episode 60

Living longer and more joyfully — that’s quite a promise, yeah.

Is there a better one? To live as long as you can and to be joyful day after day. Sounds like a successful life.

There are a number of research projects that find explored two understandings of Creativity and the impact both had on a joyful longevity.

One study recruited participants who were regular participants in an Artistic iteration of Creativity, like dancing, singing, performing in a play, playing a musical instrument, writing poetry and stories, and painting.

Another study recruited participants who were selected because they brought a Creative approach to daily living. They took new courses. They joined different organizations. They traveled. They were playful and curious. They were generous and kind with their friends and families.

In both cases it found that folks who were Creative in either sense were likely to live longer and find more joy in the things they do.

Here’s a proven activity that will help you grow your Creative approach to life.

It’s the 30 Day Creative Action Program (CAP).

It’s simple. Once a day for 30 days you either do something you have never done before or you do something you do habitually in a new way.

Some examples of breaking the habit:

-I brush my teeth with my left hand. Today I will brush them with my right hand.

-I sleep with my head on the south end of the bed, tonight I will sleep with my head on the north side.

Examples of brand new activities:

-I have never fixed a French haute cuisine meal.

-I have never stood in line at a coffee shop, turned to introduce myself to the stranger behind me, and offer to buy their coffee.

You do just one activity a day from either list. Bring some fun, a sense of whimsy when you can.

By kicking the status quo in the butt just a little bit every day you will find after just a couple of weeks of daily practice that you are taking a new perspective on the world around you.

“Exploring Your Creative Genius” takes an expansive view on what it means to be creative and entrepreneurial in an ongoing conversation led by Carl Nordgren — entrepreneur, novelist, and lifelong student with decades of experience growing his own creative capacity and assisting others to do the same in exciting new ways!
