Exploring Your Creative Genius: Episode 111

In this show I revisit a topic I discussed a couple of years ago. Liminality refers to the transition, the in-between moments and spaces where one state ends and another has not yet begun—it’s the threshold of transformation. Derived from the Latin limen (threshold), it describes ambiguity, potential, and the dissolution of old structures before new ones form.

Time: Liminal periods—like twilight, childhood, or career changes—are defined by their uncertainty and that provides opportunities for creativity. These moments force us to pause, reflect, and reimagine. Rituals, like a graduation, often mark such transitions, acknowledging, celebrating the newness occurring.

Space: Physical liminal spaces—doorways, airports, foyers—are neither here nor there; that can evoke unease but it can also fuel inspiration. Psychologically, they mirror our inner transitions, like grief or self-reinvention. Artists and writers exploit these spaces—empty hallways for instance, to evoke introspection.

Why It’s Important: Liminality is where change happens. By embracing discomfort, we unlock growth. Modern life often rushes past these pauses, but leaning into them fosters resilience and insight. Practices like threshold journaling, ritualizing transitions, or meditating in literal “in-between” places like shorelines or the foot of a mountain can help harness their power.

Liminality teaches us to dwell in possibility. In love, creativity, or your personal evolution, the threshold is not only a gap—it’s a crucible, where the magic of becoming unfolds.

“Exploring Your Creative Genius” takes an expansive view on what it means to be creative and entrepreneurial in an ongoing conversation led by Carl Nordgren — entrepreneur, novelist, and lifelong student with decades of experience growing his own creative capacity and assisting others to do the same in exciting new ways!
