When you write you are more creative if you write on paper with a pen or pencil. When you write by hand you activate a network of motor, visual, and cognitive systems simultaneously. Your brain has to coordinate fine motor control, spatial reasoning, and language processing all at once—researchers call that a “desired difficulty.”
Typing engages fewer neural circuits, resulting in more passive cognitive engagement.
Another set of research projects found that if you were asked to come up with a bunch of unique uses for an object that you are looking at, let’s say, a wine bottle cork, you have a certain result.
But if you are asked to generate unique uses for the cork and you are holding that cork in your hand you come up with many more uses and they are more original.
