Exploring Your Creative Genius: Episode 155

In this week’s show our guest was Sameer Samal. Sameer is a serial entrepreneur, an expert witness, and is recognized as a leading Abraham Lincoln scholar. The show focuses on Lincoln, much to my delight.

It didn’t know until I began preparing for this show that Lincoln is the only U.S. president to hold a patent. He was a ferryman as a young man—I did know that—and patent No. 6,469, titled “Buoying Vessels Over Shoals”, was for a device that used adjustable, inflatable bellows attached to the sides of a boat to lift it over shallow sandbars. It was never manufactured but his prototype is in the Smithsonian.

Lincoln is acknowledged as one of the best writers of all our political leaders. In 1860 he was invited to deliver a lecture on the History of Discoveries and Inventions and said  that “Writing—the art of communicating thoughts to the mind, through the eye—is the great invention of the world…enabling us to converse with the dead, the absent, and the unborn, at all distances of time and space”.

Sameer is on the Board of Directors for The Abraham Lincoln Long Nine Museum and you’ll meet him at the museum in this short and entertaining video.

He is also the founder of Girl Power Talk, an organization helping girls and young women develop their leadership skills.

“Exploring Your Creative Genius” takes an expansive view on what it means to be creative and entrepreneurial in an ongoing conversation led by Carl Nordgren — entrepreneur, novelist, and lifelong student with decades of experience growing his own creative capacity and assisting others to do the same in exciting new ways!
