April 12 is Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry’s and there will be long lines at Franklin St and Columbia.

Ben & Jerry’s makes very good ice cream and has even gone vegan for us.  For the past two years, a group has been there passing out flyers to the waiting cone folk.

Why?

Ben & Jerry’s has a strong policy on using their business for peace and justice.  Here are some quotes from their principles:

“Peace won’t happen on its own. Doesn’t everyone want to live in a peaceful society? Of course – and that’s why Ben & Jerry’s is committed to being a part of the growing peace-building movement. It’s a collection of organizations and individuals (and a few businesses!) throughout the world who recognize that peace is something that we must actively create…Ben & Jerry’s approach is to nourish peace and justice at the roots.”

They aren’t reaching out to this by selling and profiting from sales in the illegal settlements of Palestine where Israelis have built  illegal Jewish-only settlements on stolen Palestinian land.

This year, protesters will feature “Burma Shave” signs with flyers provided by Vermont is for Peace and Justice.

Peace Pops sold

Ben & Jerry’s –
today they’re treating.
But Palestinians
take a beating.

Why do it if it isn’t fun?
So say Ben and Jerry.
Palestinians under the gun –
is that what makes them merry?

Come by, y’all for a cone and info.
