Erin Matson is a Tar Heel, world-class athlete, team player and champion. Here, in “Notes From the Field,” she’ll be sharing some of her thoughts in an ongoing series set to cover anything and everything on her mind. You can find the full series so far here, on Chapelboro.
Sometimes you need a reminder that you are loved.
I’ve tried to keep this “Notes From the Field” series pretty down-to-earth and transparent thus far, and we’re not straying away from that now, peeps.
I can’t remember if I’ve told you that I’m a ‘quote girl’ (I’ll be sure to share my favorites at a later time). But for now, let’s focus on one I’m sure most of you have heard before: “Everyone’s fighting a battle you know nothing about.”
There’s also this one that my parents constantly reminded me of when growing up: “A crisis is always as intense as the person who is experiencing it perceives it.”
Take a second and think about those.
Big or small, everyone’s got somethin’.
And just like we shouldn’t compare ourselves to each other, we shouldn’t compare our hard(er) times to those of others. That’s not the point of this. The point of this is also not for everyone to think, “Oh no, what’s wrong with Erin.” Because trust me, you’re wasting your energy asking that question right now.
Sometimes a certain period of time really annoys you, right? Or makes you sad. Or makes you angry. It could be a few hours, a few days, or a few weeks. Years ago, months ago, or even yesterday. Maybe it was a certain someone rather than a situation. It could also have been yourself and your own actions too. Whatever and whenever, you know what I’m talking about.
Sometimes, life ain’t easy, and it feels like you’ve lost some control.
But you know what: you’re here, right? You either worked through it or are currently working through it.
That’s the beauty of life. “Without lows, there can be no highs.”
And there’s probably another rock in the road, pothole, or even dead end that you’ll encounter later on. But guess what, you’ll handle that too.
And someday, hopefully, you’ll look back and be thankful for how much stronger it made you. Or you’ll laugh at how catastrophic it felt when you really needed to remind yourself that there actually could be worse things.
This season has been a dream, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. But that doesn’t mean there haven’t been some things to handle.
Big or small, everyone’s got somethin’. But also, everyone’s got someone.
It could be your best friend, or it could be a complete stranger. Hell, I’m a stranger, and I’ll say it!
I’m proud of you; you should be proud of yourself.
You’ll get through it and it’ll eventually suck a lot less; look forward to those days while staying present.
You deserve to be happy; you know deep down you will be.
“We are here to add what we can to life – not to get what we can from it;” don’t take that for granted.
You are loved – by a lot of people; love yourself.
