Welcome to Bridging the Gap, presented by Orange Partnership and airing on 97.9 The Hill and Chapelboro.com!

This month enjoy a conversation with Breah Woolson, Program Specialist for Orange Partnership, and Christie Barker-Cummings of Overdose Lifeline, and Board Member for Orange Partnership as they discuss the importance of primary prevention.

Primary prevention is a universal (meaning whole population) approach to improve health outcomes for children and families.  It can reduce the risk of developing health problems, such as substance use disorders or diseases, thus lowering healthcare costs and improving quality of life. It is critical and more cost-effective than harm reduction or treatment. Primary prevention starts before birth and continues all throughout a person’s life. A great example is immunizations.

Through the past three years of Orange Partnership’s funding through SAMHSA’s Partnership for Success grant, about $1,125,000 has been infused into the community, of which about $300,000 went directly to Orange Partnership coalition members who are providing direct services to youth and their families.  These funds helped to pilot at least three programs that previously were not available in the county.

Listen to the full conversation between 97.9 The Hill’s Andrew Stuckey, Breah Woolson, and Christie Barker-Cummings as they discuss the importance of Orange Partnership’s local primary prevention efforts, how they could be impacted by the loss of federal funding, and their new ADAPT Teen Space that just opened in Hillsborough.

Anyone and everyone can and should get involved in the work of primary prevention, which can start with practicing healthy and safe guidelines at home.
