Fridays_on_Front_Porch_462_by_305Fridays are always a great day to hear some live music at the Carolina Inn. Their Fridays on the Front Porch events are a place to meet with family, friends or co-workers and grab some excellent food and spirits. This Friday, catch the Franklin Street Band with Mic Mixon (NOT of Carolina Panthers fame) playing some familiar and unfamiliar tunes, and bring a blanket for the lawn seating. No reservations or tickets are necessary.

The Old Ceremony with Shark’s Quest and Curtis Eller
Friday, 9/13, 8PM @ Cat’s Cradle
$12-$15.

The Old Ceremony and Shark’s Quest are two Chapel Hill-based rock groups that could be just as comfortable in New York as they will be in Carrboro on Friday. Polished sounds reminiscent of classic rock and local indie favorites are sure to be heard in addition to the banjo and yodeling sounds of the third act, Curtis Eller. His band, The American Circus, plays music that touches on topics from John Wilkes Booth to Amelia Earhart. Do something different and make it to the Cat’s Cradle on Friday.

“Freddie for a Day: The Songs of Queen”
Saturday, 9/14, 7PM @ Chapel Hill Underground
$10

This special event hosted at Chapel Hill Underground (or CHUG for short) is a benefit show for Planned Parenthood of NC and the Mercury Phoenix Trust, an AIDS benefit program put in the name of the late Queen front man. Fantastico!, Magnolia Collective, Curtis Eller’s American Circus, Billy Sugarfix, Beloved Binge, New Town Drunks, Mark Simonsen, Jeff Hart and Bears in the City are included in the list of artists playing this great event that will showcase many of Queen’s lesser-known songs and starts at 9PM. However, show up early for the 7PM art exhibit to get the first look at an installation of Mercury portraits. Don’t forget to dress as Freddie if you can pull it off- otherwise, just get down to CHUG before you miss “Bohemian Rhapsody”.

Carolina Panthers vs. Buffalo Bills
Sunday, 9/15, 1PM @ Carolina Brewery
No Cover.

The Carolina Brewery on West Franklin is an ideal spot to watch the Panthers claw back to 1-1 this Sunday. No cover charge and a friendly atmosphere is a plus for families, while tailgaters will enjoy the in-house beers on tap and the new fall menu. Tons of high-definition TVs viewable from many angles will allow the fantasy heads to keep track of scores, and the free parking pretty much seals the deal. After the games, check out the next “Show to Catch”, conveniently located a block west of the Brewery.

Big Lebowski Night
Sunday, 9/15, 5PM @ Beer Study
No Cover, 21+.

Beer StudyOnly a few movies in history have created the kind of cult following The Big Lebowski has, effectively making the act of bowling (sorry, Kingpin) or drinking White Russian cocktails infinitely more funny than it ever should have been. Expect a special on signature Lebowski drinks, and make sure to dress as your favorite character for the costume contest. Try your hand at the Wii Bowling Tournament, but please put the wrist strap on before you roll. To make the free entry seem that much sweeter, Queens of the Stone Age tickets will be up for grabs. The Dude abides.
