Trending today: scholars are mystified by the lack of bones at 19th-century battlefields, but there may be a macabre explanation – a new book suggests that the bones were dug up and converted to “bone char,” which was a valuable commodity used in the production of sugar. (So 19th-century sugar was partly comprised of people? Actually, that probably shouldn’t be all that surprising.)
