Trending today: a massive leak of 4.4 million tonnes (that’s tonnes, not tons!) of methane gas in Turkmenistan. But there’s also better news: an ill-fated attempt to promote tourism that’s finally reaping environmental dividends after 50 years. Back in the 1970s, officials in the Canary Islands shipped in 240,000 tonnes (not tons!) of sand to build a pristine beach; that effort failed spectacularly at the time – but today, all that sand has turned into a popular habitat for angel sharks. (And shark divers too, so that tourism-promotion effort is actually paying off after all.)
