Trending today: lawsuits trying to determine whether the government owes you anything if they destroy your property in pursuit of a fugitive. Insurance doesn’t usually cover damages caused by police activity, and there have been some high-profile cases where innocent bystanders have lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damage with no recompense. (It all raises lots of questions. Shouldn’t it be the fugitive who’s held liable? What if they haven’t actually been convicted of anything? Is the government more liable if their action was excessive, versus if they can show it was necessary? And so on, and so on, and so on…)
