Trending today: Victor and Aaron take a deep dive into the “loneliness epidemic,” which is having widespread negative repercussions. Aaron points out that modern technology has made it much, much easier for individuals to entertain themselves – which may be preferable to socializing at any given specific moment, but ultimately leaves us unfulfilled if that’s all we ever do. Victor adds a compounding factor: in the last 25 years there’s been a big decline in the number of “third spaces” where people even have the chance to gather together in the first place. (That includes bowling alleys, which reminds Aaron of the influential 1990s book “Bowling Alone” – which identified a proto-loneliness epidemic by observing that more and more people are going bowling on their own. Is the situation even worse now, since there aren’t even as many bowling alleys for people to leave the house for?) Also on a related note, Aaron remembers a talk he recently heard about a beloved kids’ show – and why it may be so beloved in the first place.
