Aaron welcomes State Sen. Graig Meyer (D-Orange) for an extended conversation on issues affecting the state legislature. Meyer says he’s frustrated with Republican leaders’ inability to agree on a budget, which (among other things) is affecting state employee pay, funding for schools, and healthcare, even threatening the survival of rural hospitals. Meyer also weighs in on SLAPP lawsuits (“strategic lawsuits against public participation”), which are often used by powerful organizations and corporations to silence critics: North Carolina is one of only 12 states in the U.S. without a law protecting residents against those suits. Finally, Meyer discusses the value of “losing loudly” in social movements: lifting your voice, getting noticed, and taking a public stand even when you know you’re going to lose the battle, so that you can raise issues and concerns and win support from others that will help in the long run.
