Today, Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood joins Aaron to discuss a pair of recent state bills that limit the power of local sheriffs: one that requires sheriffs to cooperate with detainer requests from ICE (federal immigration officials), and another that allows residents to buy handguns without getting a sheriff’s permit. Blackwood’s opposed to both bills: on immigration, he says he’s worried about the impact it’ll have on the trust relationship between Latino residents and law enforcement agents; on guns, he says the key is figuring out how to keep weapons out of the hands of those who shouldn’t have them – while encouraging everyone else to be responsible with their own firearms.
