The Ackland Art Museum has a new exhibit: “Lotus Moon and Nandina Staff: The Art of Ōtagaki Rengetsu and Nakahara Nantenbō,” on display through June 11. This Friday, April 14, as part of 2nd Friday ArtWalk, the Ackland is hosting a poetry event around the exhibit, with readings from local poets, an open mic from 6-7 p.m., and a chance to write your own “tanka” or “waka” poem inspired by the art. Guest poets include Piedmont Laureate Dasan Ahanu, Carrboro poet laureate Liza Wolff-Francis, and members of the NC Haiku Society. Then on Saturday, April 15, the Ackland will host an outdoor poetry-writing workshop from 10:30-1:30 at Coker Arboretum.

Aaron speaks with Allison Portnow Lathrop, the head of public programs at the Ackland, and Lenard Moore, the executive chairman of the NC Haiku Society.
