The Burwell School Historic Site in Hillsborough recently announced a name change: it’s now the Elizabeth Keckly Center at the Burwell School, in honor of Elizabeth Hobbs Keckly – who was enslaved there as a young woman before buying her freedom and becoming a nationally renowned dressmaker and confidante to Mary Todd Lincoln during the Civil War.
Visit BurwellSchool.org for more on the name change and their ongoing programming.
