In today’s news: the 2024 election is in the books – a win for Republicans nationally, though North Carolina Democrats have cause to celebrate too. Democrats won races for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, and state school superintendent – and it also (tentatively) appears Democrats were able to break the GOP’s supermajority in the State House. On the other side, the GOP won races for agriculture commissioner, labor commissioner, insurance commissioner, auditor, treasurer – and most notably, Republican Jefferson Griffin appears to have narrowly won a spot on the State Supreme Court. Locally, Orange County voters approved a school bond referendum; Chapel Hill voters approved five town bonds; and Cristobal Palmer won an open seat on the Carrboro Town Council.
Also, a win for UNC field hockey in the first round of the ACC tournament, and a preview of UNC men’s soccer as their own ACC tourney run begins.
