The No. 1 UNC women’s tennis team’s NCAA title defense is off to a flying start. The Tar Heels swept home matches with Elon and Campbell on Friday and Monday to open up their 2024 spring season.

In doubles on Friday against the Phoenix, the top-ranked doubles team of Reese Brantmeier and Elizabeth Scotty made quick work of their opponents, winning 6-0. Abbey Forbes and Reilly Tran, the 11th-ranked team in the nation, won 6-1 in their match to clinch the doubles point for Carolina.

In singles, Brantmeier dropped just one game in a straight-sets victory, while Forbes, Scotty and Carson Tanguilig each also won easily. Freshman Thea Rabman, ranked No. 32 in singles, won 6-0, 6-3 on Court No. 5 while junior Lindsay Zink won in straight sets on Court No. 6 to seal the 7-0 sweep.

On Monday against the Camels, Brantmeier and Scotty once again dominated in doubles 6-0, and Tanguilig and Fiona Crawley clinched the point with a 6-1 win.

Crawley stayed hot in her singles season debut for the Tar Heels, winning 6-0, 6-0 on Court No. 1. The rest of the lineup wasn’t far behind, as Tanguilig, Tran, Forbes, Rabman and senior Sara McClure each also won in straight sets.

The women’s tennis team hasn’t dropped a regular-season match since April 2022. The going gets tougher next weekend, as Carolina will host No. 11 Auburn on Saturday and No. 3 Georgia on Sunday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Sunday’s showdown with the Bulldogs is a rematch of last season’s national semifinals, which Carolina won 4-0.
