The No. 1 UNC women’s tennis team finished off a perfect regular season by defeating Duke 4-1 at the newly-dedicated Chewning Tennis Center in Chapel Hill on Friday.
The Chewning Center is the school’s new outdoor tennis facility to go along with the Cone-Kenfield indoor facility. Cone-Kenfield also underwent renovations as part of the construction of the Chewning Center.
The Tar Heels made sure they didn’t spoil the ceremonies against the Blue Devils, winning the doubles point and then cruising in singles. The fourth-ranked doubles tandem of Fiona Crawley and Carson Tanguilig took care of business in their match before Reese Brantmeier and Reilly Tran clinched the point for Carolina.
Duke evened the match at a point apiece in the first singles match, but straight-sets victories from Anika Yarlagadda, Abbey Forbes, Tanguilig and Brantmeier ensured a Carolina victory. Brantmeier’s win came against a familiar foe: Cameron Morra, who played for four years at Carolina before joining the Blue Devils as a graduate transfer.
Friday’s win means the Tar Heels finish the regular season at 27-0 and 13-0 in ACC play. It’s the second time in three years Carolina has completed an undefeated regular season (the Tar Heels were also 18-0 when the 2019-20 season was cancelled due to the COVID pandemic). Now, UNC will move on to next week’s ACC Championship in Cary, where the Tar Heels will look to capture their 12th conference title and second in three years. Carolina lost in the semifinals of last year’s championship.
