The UNC women’s tennis team’s 29-match winning streak came to an end in the ACC Championship Sunday in Cary, as Carolina fell 4-1 to NC State. It’s the Tar Heels’ first loss in a dual match since the 2022 national semifinals.
The match got off on the wrong foot for UNC immediately as the Tar Heels dropped the doubles point for the first time all tournament. The pair of Fiona Crawley and Carson Tanguilig lost 6-1 and the pair of Reilly Tran and Abbey Forbes lost 6-2. It was the beginning of a terrible afternoon for Crawley, who promptly lost her singles match 6-2, 6-1. It was the first loss in singles since February 1 for the top-ranked Crawley.
Tanguilig and Elizabeth Scotty lost in straight sets as well to give the match to the Wolfpack. Reese Brantmeier’s straight-sets singles win was the only point on the board for the Tar Heels. Abbey Forbes and Anika Yarlagadda had each lost the first sets in their matches as well, with those matches being halted after Scotty’s loss clinched the NC State win.
The loss denies Carolina its 12th ACC title, but the Tar Heels will still likely be a high seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Once the bracket is announced, the tournament will get underway with regionals at campus sites beginning on May 5.
