The UNC women’s tennis team’s four-year run of dominance at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship came to an end on Saturday, as the Tar Heels fell to NC State in the quarterfinals in Seattle. The Wolfpack are the only team to beat Carolina in a duel match in the last two seasons.

UNC won the doubles point thanks to wins from the pair of Elizabeth Scotty and Anika Yarlagadda as well as Abbey Forbes and Reilly Tran. But NC State came back with a vengeance in singles, winning four of six opening sets. Tran and Thea Rabman were the only two Tar Heels to win their first sets in singles, and both won their matches in three sets.

On the other courts, only Yarlagadda was able to come back and win her second set to stay alive. Fiona Crawley, Carson Tanguilig and Forbes each fell in straight sets. Yarlagadda and NC State’s Anna Zyryanova played to a third-set tiebreak, but it was Zyryanova who prevailed to give the Wolfpack the upset win.

The loss snaps Carolina’s run of four consecutive ITA championships and is the team’s first loss on the 2024 season. The Tar Heels will be back in action on February 23 when they visit Florida State to begin ACC play.
