UNC kept its undefeated season alive Wednesday in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals in Charlotte, beating Virginia Tech 19-9 to advance to Friday’s semifinals.
The Tar Heels scored four goals inside the game’s first six minutes to take control early, with two coming off the stick of Ashley Humphrey in a span of 55 seconds. Humphrey would complete her hat trick in the closing stages of the second quarter, scoring at the 1:47 mark to give UNC an 11-2 lead. It capped off a 7-0 Carolina run after the Hokies had cut the initial four-goal deficit to 4-2.
Humphrey added one more goal in the third quarter, while her younger sister Chloe Humphrey also completed a hat trick in just 8:47 of game time. Chloe’s first two goals came in a span of 23 seconds and stopped what had been a 3-0 spurt from Virginia Tech. UNC’s Addison Pattillo became the third Tar Heel with a hat trick with three late goals.
Ashley Humphrey added three assists on the day, giving her a team-high seven points. Eliza Osburn, Marissa White, Olivia Vergano and Caroline Godine also found the back of the net multiple times. UNC outshot the Hokies 39-19 overall. Through three quarters, the Tar Heels held a 26-8 edge in shots on goal.
The win improves UNC to 16-0 overall this season and is the team’s first on a neutral field. The Tar Heels will be back in action when they face either No. 4 seed Duke or No. 5 seed Clemson Friday at 5 p.m. in the semifinals.
