The UNC women’s lacrosse team scored six first-quarter goals in its home opener against Liberty and cruised from there to earn a 19-6 win against the Flames, Carolina’s first of the 2024 season.

Sophomore midfielder Darcy Felter, who entered the evening with only eight goals in her collegiate career, netted half that with a game-high four against the Flames. Felter was one of 10 different Tar Heels to score, and one of seven to find the back of the net twice. Felter also dished out a pair of assists to tie her with Reilly Casey for the game high with six points. Casey’s stat line was the opposite of Felter’s: two goals and four assists.

Carolina was never truly threatened, scoring its first three goals in less than seven minutes and leading 9-1 midway through the second quarter. UNC drew nine penalties against the Flames and scored four of its goals with a player advantage. In net, Alecia Nicholas played nearly the entire game and made seven saves.

The Tar Heels are now 1-1 on the young season and have not lost a home opener since 2013. Carolina will be back in action when it hosts No. 12 Florida at Dorrance Field on Saturday at 11 a.m.
