UNC bounced back from its overtime loss to Louisville last weekend in a big way Wednesday night, beating UNC-Wilmington 84-34 at Carmichael Arena.

Carolina’s defense limited the Seahawks all night, forcing UNC-Wilmington into more turnovers (22) than made shots (14) and allowing only one made three-pointer. It’s the third time this season UNC has held an opponent to two or fewer made threes. The Seahawks never scored more than 12 points in any quarter and scored just four across the final 10 minutes.

For the Tar Heels, freshman Nyla Brooks led the way with 16 points on 6-10 shooting, including a 4-7 performance from long distance. Ciera Toomey added 15 points to go along with eight rebounds, four blocks, an assist and a steal. Indya Nivar was the third Tar Heel in double figures, scoring 10 points and missing out on a double-double by one rebound.

Five different Tar Heels grabbed at least five rebounds on the night, leading to a 54-29 edge for Carolina on the glass. UNC outscored the Seahawks 42-24 in points in the paint and 17-4 in second-chance points. Head coach Courtney Banghart emptied her bench while UNC-Wilmington played just eight players, and it resulted in a 49-9 advantage in bench points for the Tar Heels.

UNC’s 50-point win is its largest this season, and the 34 points allowed are the team’s fewest since the 2023-24 season.

Carolina is now 10-3 overall this season and will wrap up the non-conference portion of its regular season schedule when it hosts Charleston Southern at Carmichael Arena Sunday at 12 p.m. The Tar Heels will then break for the Christmas holiday before visiting Boston College on Dec. 29.
