For the third time this season, the UNC women’s basketball team blew a double-digit lead in a 60-59 loss to Miami in the ACC Tournament’s second round on Thursday afternoon. This time, Carolina led by 14 in the first half but went through offensive doldrums in the second half as the Hurricanes rallied.

Deja Kelly and Alyssa Ustby each scored 15 for the Tar Heels, but it was Kelly who missed a potential game-winning shot in the final seconds. Carolina had three possessions in the last minute of play in which the Tar Heels could have taken the lead with a made shot, but turned the ball over twice before Kelly’s final miss. Kelly finished 6-20 from the floor.

UNC had led 34-20 in the second quarter after a 14-5 run, but Miami closed the half strong and made a half-court shot at the buzzer to cut the lead to 37-30. The Hurricanes kept that momentum going in the third quarter, outscoring Carolina 15-10 to trim the deficit to two points, 47-45.

Carolina looked ready to pull away early in the fourth after it extended the lead to 54-48, but Miami responded with a 12-1 run to take a 60-55 lead with 2:02 left. A pair of free throws from Lexi Donarski after an unsportsmanlike foul on Miami and a Kelly floater in rapid succession cut that lead to one point, but UNC would get no further.

In five seasons under head coach Courtney Banghart, Carolina has won only one ACC Tournament game. Thursday’s loss was the third in that same time span in which the Tar Heels have been the higher seed. Now, UNC will wait until the NCAA Tournament Selection Show on Sunday, March 17 at 8 p.m. to find out where – or if – the team will be playing in the postseason.
