The UNC volleyball team continued its hot start to the season by sweeping West Virginia and Loyola-Maryland in its first two home matches of the season at Carmichael Arena.

Graduate transfer Emani’ Foster, who arrived in Chapel Hill in the offseason from Charlotte, led the way for Carolina with 15 kills against the Mountaineers. No teammate had more than eight. UNC put on an offensive clinic Thursday, posting 44 kills to just 28 for West Virginia and serving up six aces. It helped Carolina win each set by a comfortable margin, with a kill by Foster on match point putting away the third set, 25-21, and giving UNC the win.

Carolina was just as dominant on Saturday against the Greyhounds. Junior star Mabrey Shaffmaster took the lead on offense this time, posting 11 kills and five aces to pace the Tar Heels. UNC served 10 aces in total and dominated at the net, registering 11 blocks to just one for Loyola.

The two straight-sets wins move the Tar Heels to 4-1 on the season, with challenging road trips to Michigan and Michigan State looming next weekend. UNC beat the Spartans and lost to the Wolverines in Carmichael Arena last season.
