Senior captain Seth Trimble will be out for the foreseeable future after suffering a broken arm, No. 25 UNC men’s basketball announced on Sunday night.

The program shared that its star senior guard suffered the injury during a team workout earlier in the day. He is set to undergo surgery to address the broken bone — which is in his left forearm — this week, after which a timeline for his recovery will be set.

“[I’m] so sad for Seth,” UNC head coach Hubert Davis said in the team release. “He’s such a great kid and teammate and has worked so hard for his senior year. He loves being a Tar Heel and we love him. The good news is he will be back at some point this year, and I know he will continue to be a great leader for us until he can get back in the lineup.”

The loss of Trimble leaves Carolina without its longest-tenured member of the program and its primary perimeter defender. During Friday’s win over No. 19 Kansas, the senior scored 17 points and a team-high 8 rebounds while drawing the defensive assignment of the Jayhawks top scorer Darryn Peterson. Despite the star freshman scoring 22 points, Trimble limited his effectiveness — especially during the second half as Carolina pushed ahead. Across his collegiate career, Trimble has played in 104 games.

After the jubilation of the Tar Heels’ marquee win over Kansas on Friday night, which was the first meeting of the two blue blood programs in Chapel Hill, the injury to their captain clouds the backcourt’s immediate future. Trimble started at shooting guard in UNC’s four exhibition and regular season games alongside point guard Kyan Evans. International transfer and junior Luka Bogavac has averaged the most minutes off the bench and has regularly played on the perimeter, with sophomore wing Jonathan Powell, and guards Derek Dixon, Jaydon Young and Isaiah Denis also standing to see more playing time in Trimble’s absence.

Trimble posted a team photo on his Instagram story after the news was shared on Sunday, saying “My bruddas got me while I’m down. I’ll see y’all in a few weeks.”

UNC star freshman forward Caleb Wilson took to social media to share the injury news, but posted that Trimble “will be back stronger.” Several former Tar Heel players also shared the news with their own condolences and confidence in Trimble’s recovery.

The Tar Heels’ next game is Tuesday, Nov. 11, as Carolina welcomes Radford to the Dean E. Smith Center at 7 p.m.
