****UPDATE: UNC officially announced Sunday morning that Fedora will not be retained as head football coach.****
According to a report published Saturday night by Greg Barnes of Inside Carolina, sources within the UNC football program are indicating that the school will likely part ways with head coach Larry Fedora.
The Tar Heels have gone 45-43 (28-28 ACC) during Fedora’s seven-year tenure in charge, but have gone just 5-18 over the last two seasons.
An ACC Coastal Division championship in 2015 was the highlight of Fedora’s time in Chapel Hill, a year that also saw UNC tie a school record with 11 wins.
Prior to that season’s ACC Championship Game loss to Clemson, Fedora agreed to a seven-year contract extension set to run through 2022. Because of that deal, Barnes reports it will cost the university roughly $12.4 million to pay the coach’s buyout.
Known for his up-tempo offensive coaching style, the Tar Heels set more than 100 single-season and career records under Fedora’s leadership.
